Yep the old secret surfing spot everyone has them and everyone knows where they are.....in most instances.
The pleasure of driving up some dusty track and bobbing over the top of a hill to find no one in the water and peeling lefts and rights...ah. Well they do exist in Australia and require a little effort by driving and not taking a plane hiring a car and zap zing wham bam and back to the plane or 5 star resort. Mind you time is required.
Today I have taken a few pictures of one such spot and leave you to imagine a little. Due to camera limitations pictures of good surfing in the water are hard to capture. Therefore it is the tantalising lead up to the water that wets the apatite for those willing to do the old road trip.
Next weekend (20/8/11) is a surfswap being held at Sandyfeet in Port Macquarie (www.sandyfeetsurf.com.au). I have visited this shop on many occasions and am pleased they are not following the traditional line of corporate surf shop models. Having said that, they both have a place, particularly Quicksilver who seem to be keeping a little left of field and not developing into a "Lowes".
Sandyfeet is similar to the Finbox at Thirroul.
Details:
I have discovered a few dirt roads that create shortcuts when its not raining and at times it feels very lonely racing down these roads with wide open spaces and no hospitals in sight in case I have the mandatory heart attack at the wheel.
I took this picture (while I was driving-go figure!) listening to "Bohemian Like You" by the Dandy Warhols , talk about a contradiction of sight and sound....
Yep the wide open spaces the potential to roll it, the chance of a kangaroo jumping through the window, breaking down and being stranded where axe murderers are born......ah the thrill of it all.
I know this site is to do with surfing in the main so why this? Because its part of a road trip and the forgotten excitement of being on the ground and out there.
The Secret Spot
I reckon just about every secret spot on the coast looks similar to this, the drive along the track up over the hill and there it is.....
I intend to bring you more secret spots as I progress up and down the coast, and those wishing to know exactly where they are............well......hop in car and burn some carbon.
The only thing I will say about this place is "Clash of the turtles land" - for those not understanding the meaning of this please read my post titled " The clash of the turtles". This is not far from the sand dune viper room.
Words that Provoke Thought
Better camera..... birthday and christmas not far away, or Fathers day.....(I'm assuming my kids read this).
Aloha
