Todays post comes from Kingscliff on the Tweed Coast. A short trip from Crescent Head (short being 4-5 hours - a country mile).
The past few days has seen some good swell and film has been captured for the edit room.
Without lapsing into a travel catalogue or obvious advice, this part of the coast, particularly from Byron Bay to Coolangatta is magic. The surf seems to deliver regularly, but of equal importance is the backdrop to the ocean. Green mountains with all sorts of sharp shapes and the volcanic rocks shaping some unusual formations. The towns have not been overdone and compliment the surfing environment. Some may say Byron is a busy mess and not like the "old days", well nothing is like the old days but at least it compliments the area well. Spend some decent time in this area and it is hard not to want to return.
Observations
One of the great things about taking film is that you spend a lot of time observing people, places, and scenes.
One such observation is that of the emerging Californian hipster. This appears to be the new challenge to the more established surfing scene. Its always good to see challenges to the established trends, however, having lived long enough to see the original surfing scene which was influenced heavily by the Americans (at the time called septic tanks) it is amusing.
The above photo was taken in 28 degree, humid heat, and demonstrates the pain some go through to be part of the hipster scene. Felt hat, jacket and jeans and the longboard.
All good........BUT........with the greatest respect, please don't bring that cool californian self centred style into the water. Take your turn on the waves and at least acknowledge other surfers are in the water too.
Enough said.
Todays clip is a one wave slow motion demonstration of the elegance with which some surfers glide over a wave and turn themselves inside out to perfect moves that inspire. While some will observe the moves like a technician, others may watch the flow of water and see just how beautiful the whole movement of the surfer, water and wave shape delivers eye candy. I just simply love this clip for the whole and parts.
Enjoy:
Quiksilvers Dylan Hayllar in a drinking establishment in the Byron area.
I'm off to have a surf and film and will be returning to Crescent Head in the next couple of days. On my return the regular format of "fashion, how to identify the perfect and relationship advice" will return.
I have lost Milo Minderbinder but am of the belief he is at Nimbin catching up with old friends........
Aloha.
