For those living in Australia it is a known fact that heading south means getting colder, for the those in Europe and the USA ( 50% of followers of this site are from these areas) it is the equivalent of heading North in winter.
Before this report continues it is important that the 6Ps site brings you some improvements made for the viewers:
- The visual of this site has been updated
- The page has been reorganised to make it easier to navigate - movies and profile on the right of the page with links to vimeo and YouTube. Also included on the right of the page are links to "useful sites". This includes Quiksilver and Jackson Surfboards.
- On the left of the page are 6Ps blog archives so you can enjoy previous posts and the Blog roll which are links to other cool blogspots. Or, friends of 6Ps.
For those receiving 6Ps via email, you may not get the whole visual so it is recommended that you visit the site via internet - www.sixpees.blogspot.com/
South and Winter
The 6Ps team travelled to Gerringong on the NSW South Coast where the main surfing location in this report is Werri Beach. Some of the landscape and surfing is captured on the film in todays post (below).
The surf in the first few days was epic and as a result all of our time was spent in the water getting stoked on the barreling waves. Followed by some beer refreshment in the evenings..........As result of this self indulgence we probably missed filming the best of the surf....BUT did not miss the landscape of this beautiful environment.
The film is a little less than 4 minutes and does capture some nice sights.
When you view this clip, especially the beginning, it is easy to understand how the british invaders named this place New South Wales. For those who have visited Wales in the UK it is easy to identify how the landscape resembles the south of Wales.
Also included in this clip is some surfing in other areas. One sequence is of ex professional WCT Surfer Robbie Page ( Google Robbie Page for more information - interesting character).
Winter and surfing is a unique time with action in the water remaining much the same only slightly cooler, although if you are wearing a Quiksilver wetsuit this is minimal. The landscape changes and the creatures inhabiting the coastal environment seem to go to sleep - such as spiders and snakes.
The sea comes alive with Whales and Dolphins and the sense of less sharks is comforting. Although my mate "lefty" seems spooked all the time (has a hanging arm due to a nip from a bronze whaler shark at Crowdy Head a couple of years ago).
You may see the spider web on the right of this picture. A dead fly is hanging in the web and the spider has not bothered to eat it as yet!!! I have watched this for a couple of weeks and it seems the spider is asleep somewhere?
The colours of winter become pastel and not quite as stark as summer.
It has to be said that the 6Ps team is glad to be back on the North Coast where the temperature is a little warmer and the familiarity with home adds even more warmth. My friend Milo has stopped whining about the cold and has had enough of the Gerringong Bowling Club where he met very like minded or at least like looking types. ( at the risk of offending.....the Bowling club at times resembles the scene from the original Starwars movie of the bar and the rather weird looking creatures enjoying some drinks)
In summary, the South Coast has some awesome waves with a lot of power. The beach breaks can drive you to the bottom if you miss time a take off so quickly your breath is taken away. It is a pristine place all year round and has some incredible reef breaks. Well worth a visit after checking if the swell and wind directions are right.
The following film clip opens with the scene of coal ships anchored off Port Kemla, which despite some protests tends to typify the area. The 6Ps film crew travelled up to the escarpment that is the backdrop to Werri Beach and got some long range shots.
Enjoy - Winter and South
