Its always the way, wherever you go the old guy sitting in a corner always says "it was better in my day" "Its nothing like it was back in my day" or the classic "the world is in ruin, nothing is as good as it was".
Well in a way it probably is right that some things were better back in the day, but if you are living each day at a time it doesn't matter, you only deal with today. So there is a trick to this, you have to be able to live today......I will leave that up to you and your guru/life coach/church minister, stoned buddy or anyone else that has accomplished this miracle.
Last weekend the 6Ps crew decided to do a little weekend away from Crescent Head and head north no further than 2 hours. After all we have all been burning the candle a bit getting the Malibu DVD out plus a DVD of the local band the "Roys". It cost us a brand new IMac, a lesson in how people believe blu ray is in fact DVD, and fixing technical hitches in filming.
A reward for actually working. What an outfit this 6Ps Film organisation is.............!!
So we just drove and reminded ourselves of past glories and "those" famous surfing spots that are just not famous anymore. By the time we stopped living past glories and how it used to be we were arriving at Arrawarra and Mullaway, just slightly north of Coffs harbour. Sun shining, warm air and water and the vibe was 1969 ..... man...
No one here wants to go into how it used be without the houses, clubs, and tourists. But one thing is for sure.....the surf is less crowded than "back in the day"? The reason maybe? Bali was discovered, boards got real short, time is critical and airfares are so bloody cheap. Sure the waves are not barrelling, but the guys on todays equipment seemed to be enjoying themselves. So, we will let you, the avid reader of this blog decide the whys and wherefores.
It is fair to say that between Crescent Head and Arrawarra we passed some pretty good surfing destinations, and if we had called in on all of them we would only be half way to Arrawarra by now. Places like Valla, Scotts Head, Boambee, Sawtell, Stuarts Point, Grassy Head......and it goes on. These places, believe it or not were in Surfing World Magazine way back in the day as THE surfing destinations. But no more.....................
In a way when you live on the North Coast and you have Byron Bay and Snapper Rocks hovering above you, it is great!! Everyone just flys on by and doesn't even check these gems out. Probably because they are time poor......a curse that guts us all at some time in our life (refer 1st chapter of this blog)
In fact, I reckon we would love to see you out in the water at these places because you can't keep an old secret hidden.......................
Back to the 6Ps weekend away......we found ourselves at the end of day 1 at a place called Red Rock.
Well, what a great little place this turned out to be! Just 20 mins from Woolgoolga and a surf that has heaps of options. We spent the night at Red Rock took in some late afternoon views and rocked at the Bowling Club (just like back in the day)
We headed home the next day and called in on a few of the old used to be breaks and had an absolute "sick" time.
At the risk of bringing every local at every North Coast "old surfing spot" down on us, move slowly, take the time and surf the coast instead of the net. Don't fly past, just stay. We are all flying to the grave as fast as we can, so slow down and hasten slowly.
Aloha
