Hopefully the worst is behind and the sun can come out and produce some clear winter weather. Having said that from natures point of view it has been spectacular. Large seas, wildlife out between storms and visions of low cloud and grey.
The surf at Crescent held the swell to a point but by last Monday it was out of control.
Today's post features a short clip titled "Stormy Weather". It is a summary of events up here including some spectacular shots of birds diving for fish, in normal speed and then very slow motion. The aerodynamics have definitely been copied by engineers for fighter planes. Please view the whole clip as the pace changes throughout. Some rather unfortunate surfers get smashed by large swell and colours change throughout.
In the meantime I have basically copied a selection of photos from various sources to keep the tone of this site consistent. Some great surfing by Craig Anderson, Ozzie wright, Nathan Fletcher and others.
Enjoy this feast for eyes:
Nathan Fletcher is the guy hung on the foam ball at chopes.............deserves to be in the collage twice I reckon!
Now for a bit of self indulgence. Without doubt in my mind the most beautiful and demonstrative essence of surfing is a cut back..........yes the simple cut back. When done like Rasta it sums up changing direction at speed leaving a trail that is met on the way back to the foam. At times it appears as though it is defying gravity. G forces on the body must be enormous. Of course aerials are a separate subject.
As I am writing this the sun is appearing and now the sense of clear days ahead is getting me excited about the surf that will be here soon. Perhaps a few cutbacks are on the agenda.
Please enjoy this film, part nature, part surfing, maybe an unspoken documentary. Most of all enjoy the music of OKA ( song-The Evolution). Indigenous sounds mixed with contemporary music.
Aloha
