Foam Symmetry - Foam wizzardery

Hi there 6Ps followers..................

Well todays post is rather on the journalistic side. 6Ps has never really seen itself as a critic of surfing styles/magazines/movies/music or anything else. Just simply a conduit of surfing and travel information.

And primarily a movie maker of self styled surfing adventures and we like to try and keep it that way.

But every know and then an injustice is served up that begs for some sort of commentary.

Having said that, there is an influx of surfing genres and magazines that perhaps require a critical eye cast upon them. If not for the pure reporting of genuine good content then for the self indulgent dollar spinning rags they seem to be propagating.

So let me explain.................

A much required gap in the journalistic world of surfing has perhaps been missing for some time. As 2012 is drawing to a close we seem to have had an influx of such surfing magazines such as: Foam Symmetry, Paper Sea, White Horses, but to mention just a few.

To be honest Surfing World, Tracks and Surfing Life, but to mention just a few are beginning to get rusty. But to be fair, have lifted their games since the new guys have entered their world.

So I have set the scene...............

While the likes of Tracks and Surfing World tend to focus on todays world and are a little non committal on their genre or surfing purpose, Foam Symmetry, who I am focusing upon are just plain wankers.

An excellent article appears in the latest Surfing World that deals with board shapes, times, surfing styles etc and is spoken about in the most eloquent way by Bob McTavish. He does this amongst drop jawed younger surfers including the likes of Alex Knost.

Now this is where it gets weird....6Ps does try to keep pace with the ever present and dangerous world of Facebook and Instagram ,albeit by a different name, to stay in touch with the latest. In so doing it subscribed to Instagram and Facebook and Foam Symmetry.

The alternate or alter ego was scrubbed by Foam Symmetry by daring to say that we thought they were wankers. We quite rightly stated that we thought their magazine was ok, but that we thought they, as in the group of individuals representing Foam Symmetry while on a recent trip to California were wankers. Rather restricted journalism one might say........don't agree with me? then off you go. Rather Hitlerestic one might say.

Never the less that is their right in the Instagram world.

So where to from here? Well let me just continue with some rather telling, in 6Ps opinion, of the Foam Symmetry world.

You see these rather self indulgent fellows visited the mid North Coast at some time within the last 8 months and proceeded to absolutely violate every surfing courtesy known to man. Not only did they surf with the 1950s "look at me" boring routine but they persisted in duping every local and visitor out of waves. One of these Californian wanna bees even had the old captains hat on while surfing! Come on guys, since when has an Australian yielded to this sort of rubbish?

This is not to mention the onshore fashion fuck ups.

These are the brains trust behind Foam Symmetry.

So, back to Instagram........The happy gang posted many a shot of the Californian way of life and related self promoting pictures of the Symmetry gang getting to suck up to every known Californian potential ?? known to man . Oh happy days.

All the while the myth grows about California surfing, long boards, superglue type hair products and the Foam Symmetry Magazine.

There was a time where we thought surfing had lost its way and we needed alternatives. Not so much competition, less interference by the big Surf Companies. Perhaps alternative boardshapes and bigger prize money, less commercial influence.

Perhaps there is still a place for that, but to do a trip down memory lane with these twats and Californian dreaming? I don't think so.

Maybe they are close, maybe mid range surfboards, maybe young blokes being respectful and being aware of their own self indulgence could go to changing things. But as long as we have this obvious grab at money making in the likes of Foam Symmetry nothing or no one wins.

True forward progress is made by an honest attempt at improving things without the self being central to the outcome.

Sorry Foam Symmetry..........you failed.

Look for alternatives.............honest alternatives to Foam Symmetry.
