In Australia it is summer!!! and where I come from in Crescent Head it is all about the Point break, back beaches in the north easter wind, and long days of surfing and perfecting that bottom turn to launch you into a vertical re entry.
Days of sun, salt and breath taking evening skies while having an ice cold drink (preferably beer).
Yep it is summer.
The world rhythm of seasons has us about to receive the warm cycle while others in the world are going into their rest times, winter.
We love summer at 6Ps because it tends to melt your mind into a bit of a gooie state of carefree thoughts and actions. That state of mind where you really begin to think whether you may be over engineering your thoughts about things that can not be controlled. You are not so careful about crossing the road and looking both ways to see if traffic is coming, you just.....sort of.....stroll along and cross the road, somehow knowing that anyone in a car can see you and they don't want to run over you. If they did, they would say sorry and offer you a cool drink and a lift to the surf, because it is summer.
Sure there are summer crowds all on holidays and getting 4 weeks of scorching sunburn, but that folks is what we do, it is a ritual and a proud one. Peel the skin off the nose, pour eye drops into your sunburnt eyeballs and get a rash between your legs from wearing shorts around instead of your usual long pants.
Summer is the time of year where if you are no longer a "young" person by age, then you may just become a young person through mind - just for the holidays. Pick up a scoobie, that you have not picked up since last holiday......take a big draw on it before you hit the surf with your latest surfboard.....and.......wake up in the hospital observation ward because you passed out and spun completely out on the weed....yeah man!!!!! The kids refuse to walk with you anywhere and people begin to look at you sideways as you stroll down the street in the holiday mood, oh dear if only I had not bought that weed from Byron Bay. Too late.
The rhythm of summer is not complete without shark sitings. Everyone knows that sharks don't exist for the rest of the year only at summer. Well, it is true that they have holidays too, and just happen to go to the same holiday destinations us humans go to.
In general, sharks are not interested in human flesh because we stink. They may have a little bite to see if they do like the taste but that's all, just a little bite. The fact that the bite rips your torso out and sticks your leg up your arse (ass for USA) means nothing. The intent was not there to kill you, so just chill out.
Yep summer in Australia is just fine and dandy, relaxing, warmth, long days of surfing and a cold beer of an evening - simple but just fine.
Aloha
